The term of“hybridity”, which appeared in the 17th century, was firstused in the natural science, and then was brought into the fields of linguistics,literary studies and so on. It has become an important concept of postcolonialcriticism after Homi Bhabha introduced it into the cultural studies. Thehybridity in post-colonial theory is benefitial to elimination of culturalhegemony, promotion of equal dialogue of culture, advancement of principalstanding of weak culture, and increase of various development ofinternational culture.In recent years, the idea of hybridity has become a hot topic in thetranslation studies. However, compared with the studies in the West, in Chinathere are fewer systematical researches on this issue. What’s more, littleattention has been paid to the relation between the hybridity in translation andthe translator, who is the creator of the hybrid text. Furthermore, scholarshave always inclined to regard Ku Hungming’s English translation of Lunyuas the typical model of domestic translation. Seldom has people proposed tostudy Ku Hungming’s English translation of Lunyu in combination of thephenomenon of hybridity in post-colonial theory. So, with the concept ofHomi Bhabha’s theory of hybridity as the theoretic perspective, this paper isaiming at analyzing the features of hybridity in Ku Hungming’s translationLunyu, exploring its global meaning of hybridity.The research results fall into the following parts: chapter one illustratesthe studies on Ku’s translation Lunyu and hybridity at home and abroad;chapter two explains the relationship between hybridity and translation;chapter three analyzes the characteristics of hybridity in Ku’s translation Lunyu. At the linguistic and cultural levels, Ku adopts the strategies oftransliteration、literal translation plus annotation and cultural analogy toreproduce the linguistic and cultural features of the source text and mix theChinese cultural elements with the Western ones; at the literary level, Kukeeps the Chinese specific form of prose besides the Victorian typical featuresof prose in his version. Based on the analysis, the author finds that Ku’shybrid cultural identity is the main reason for the phenomena of hybridity atthese levels which are created by the translator intentionally.To sum up, the study on hybridity in Ku Hungming’s tanslation Lunyu isto promote the equal dialogue between Chinese and Western cultures, whichindicates Ku’s endeavor to resist Western hegemony of culture in specialcontext of history.
