Like most ESP, the vocabulary of business English (BE) has its own characteristics and regular patterns. Hyphenated compound adjective has already won a place in BE vocabulary by virtue of its rich creativity and expressive force. Its concise and convenient word formation process not only meets the Economy Principle of Language, but also accord with the trend of modern business English development. What’s more, modern society’s progress and people’s creative mind are reflected in the formation of such productive hyphenated compound adjectives.The internal syntactic and semantic relation between the morphemes of hyphenated compound adjective in BE is highly complex. Their formation has a profound cognitive motivation. The purpose of this thesis is to explain the word formation process of hyphenated compound adjectives in BE from a cognitive perspective. This thesis will first study the Morphological and syntactic (structural) features of hyphenated compound adjective in BE and analyze their meaning from a cognitive point of view, to explore the cognitive motivation of word formation.Conceptual Integration theory has been widely applied to various aspects of linguistic research. The core value of conceptual integration theory is its magnificent capacity of explaining the cognitive processes in our minds. It is hoped that this thesis can give a reasonable explanation to the cognitive mechanism in word formation of hyphenated compound adjective in BE applying conceptual integration theory of the four conceptual integration networks.
