This paper attempts to study on the similarities and differences between“abrupt”and“suddenly”in terms of adverbial function. First of all, the paperanalyzes the attribution of two words from the perspective of word class system. Andthen the paper makes a comparison on their semantics and distribution when the twowords are used as adverbs. The essay is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction. First, it tells readers the objects and reasonsof study. Second, it summarizes the existing research achievement and proposes thewriter’s opinions. Third, it states the aim, meaning and methodology of study. At lastit makes a further explanation for the corpus used in the paper. The second chapter mainly analyzes the two words from the angle of word classsystem. Namely, it must make sure that the two words is the contrast betweensynonymy adverbs or between adjective and adverb. The study proves that the word“abrupt”only has adjective function, so the contrast between“abrupt”and“suddenly”should be the contrast between similar adjective and adverb. The third chapter states the similarities and differences as the two words areadverbs. Although there exists many similarities, it also has differences. When theword“abrupt”is used as adverb, its dexterity of context is greater than the word“suddenly”. The word“abrupt”can express“usualness”or“foreseeability”with acertain aim or controllability. It can be used to express warning or reminding. However, the word“suddenly”only show a state of occasionality, provisionality anduncontrollability. The forth chapter makes a comparison from the distribution features of the twowords when they are used as adverbs. The writer thinks that there are severaldifferences of distribution: first, on occurrence with adverbs side the word“abrupt”can occur with words“will”,“usually”,“ever”,“already”and such like these, but“suddenly”can not. Second, on collocation with verbs the word“abrupt”can modify verbs having something with military and wars, for example,“sudden attack”, but“suddenly”can not. Furthermore,“abrupt”has more obvious advantage inmodifying the verbs which can express…, death and accidents than“suddenly”.Third, when the two words modify adjectives, the distinction is not obvious.
