Poor undergraduates’ mental health problems have attracted more of the domesticideological and political, mental health and other educator`s attentions. In this study,we mainly use the methods of quantitative research and qualitative research to doempirical research on the mental health status of the poor undergraduates. Weaccomplish the quantitative research of the undergraduates`mental health status throughthe use of the SCL-90scale survey over500students who are impoverished or not. Atthe same time, we have finished the qualitative research on the social supports, helpseeking will, coping style and the general mental health status of the poorundergraduates by questionnaire and interview. The main conclusions of the study areas follows:(1) Scores are quite different for Poor undergraduates and non-impoverishedcollege students as they perform in the SCL-90scale, especially in the somatization, forced symptoms, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, psychotic and theSCL-90total score. It is obviously that poor undergraduates score significantly higherthan non-impoverished students.(2) According to the score detail rules of the SCL-90, if the factor reaches2points,we may concern that symptoms are existed in this project; when it goes up to3points,further diagnosis and treatment are needed for we insist that the serious problem of thisproject is far above the average. The study found that almost every factor is matchedby poor undergraduates, and what shares the highest relevance ration is anxietysymptoms, followed by obsessive-compulsive symptoms.(3) Poor undergraduates on the SCL-90factor and total scores were significantlyhigher than the national norm, reaching the significant level, which at the top are:anxiety, depression, and compulsion.(4) There is no gender difference in all the factors of the poor undergraduates` mental health status, which means gender`s main effect is not significant.(5) Main effect of the grade is significant in somatization, obsessive-compulsivesymptoms, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, paranoia, psychosisand the total score, while it is not significant in terror factor.(6) The main effect of the subject difference is not significant in all factors of poorundergraduates.(7) There are significant differences between urban and rural universities insomatization, while in obsessive-compulsive symptoms, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, terror, paranoia, psychosis, and the total score thedifferences are not significant.(8) There are significant differences in somatization between only child andnon-only-child (P<0.01). The only child’s score was significantly higher thannon-only-child. But in Obsessive-compulsive symptoms, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, terror, paranoia, psychotic, and the total score thedifferences are not significant.(9) The questionnaire results show that the poor undergraduates’ mental healthproblems exist in the following characteristics.First, the problem of employment, interpersonal relationships, academic problemsand career development interaction affect the mental health of the poor undergraduates.Second, mental health awareness is weak. Third, the will of the psychological help isrelatively poor. The fourth is the lack of the social support.(10) Through the investigating of the case interview of10poor undergraduates wecan conclude their mental health characteristics as follows:First of all, the economy is the fundamentally factors that affect theirpsychological development. Second, the satisfaction of their own living conditions islow, subjective well-being is not high as well. Third, the surrounding support source forpsychological assistance is not enough. Fourth, the majority of poor students couldhardly accept themselves and face the reality. Finally, this study proposed countermeasures to address mental health problems ofthe poor undergraduates, which are as follows:(1) Improve the security system of the National Student Financial Assistancepolicy and to promote the sustained and healthy development of higher education fair.(2) Promote the comprehensive school`s mental health education, put prevention first and combine the prevention with control.(3) Vigorously create the campus culture and environment which are conducive tothe poor undergraduates`mental health(4) We should combine the family education with the school education and formthe mental health education model with the integration of family, school andcommunity.(5) Encourage parents to enhance communication and interaction with theirchildren, build a happy and harmonious family atmosphere.(6) Poor graduates should build up right philosophy, values and poverty concept, overcome low self-esteem and other unhealthy psychology.(7) Poor undergraduates are supposed to participate in social practice and socialwelfare activities actively in order to improve their own frustrated affordability.(8) Combine traditional mental health education with the online education atpresent and multi-channel strengthen ideological and political education.
