As an important writer on the age of contemporary literature, ShiTuo and his novels always catch theeyes of lots of people. Especially these novels with a description of countryside constitute the most part inhis works. For a long time, his novels with the theme of countryside encourage so many studies, of whichthe achievements involve all aspects no matter the analysis of test or the dissection of the ShiTuo’s thoughts.Combined with texts of this kind of his novels, this article trys to analyze the emotional attitude thatinvolved in the state of stagnation, ignorance, stuffiness, indifference and ruthlessness of the rural townwhich appears in ShiTuo’s novels. It is clear to the writer that this kind of state can not be changed in ashort time. As time goes by, people who live in this sealed circle will continue this state generation bygeneration without a way out. That’s to say, rot is their destiny. So in his novels, ShiTuo shows a strongcomplexity and profundity when he reveal the theme of ’rot’.According to the discussion of ShiTuo’s theme of ’rot’, this article can be constituted into several parts,as follows:The part of introduction is based on the presentation of several points of view showed in the studies ofShiTuo’s novels with the theme of countryside, from which the author can delimit briefly the concept of’rot’ which will be discussed in this article. In the first chapter, we will have a macro master of the “ukiyoe” living condition described inShiTuo’s novel. Every generation spent their whole life by inheritance from the last generation without anyimprovement. They are born here, died here, and rotted here finally. This chapter is divided into three parts. It can be analyzed from three perspectives: no appearance of new living styles, no acception of new livingstyles and the gradual worse of social ecology.Basing on the relevant analysis in chapter one that in what state the countryside exists, the authoranalyses several changes taking place in rustic society which have hardly an effect on the existing state ofthe whole rural areas. These changes are called “the quivering ripples on the stale water” which cannot alterthe mainstream that dominates the countryside, for people in rural areas and small cities still behave as theyplease, leaving it to collapse and rottenness. This chapter will also be divided into three categories forclarification: the outcasts returning unwillingly, the ones seeking to change being assimilated or strangledand the conformists becoming increasing poor.In chapter three, the significance of ShiTuo’s emotion and thinking about the theme “rot” is analyzed. In this chapter, we will search for the cause of the “normalization” and “variability” from the perspectivesof culture and society. Also, the function of scenery description in his writing will be analyzed. The epilogue gives a summary of the whole article, analyzing ShiTuo”s emotion with the theme of“rot” again and interpreting the conclusions of the third part of chapter three.
