The translation project provided by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press isdesigned for four of us to translate a English novel Catherine, A Story written by WilliamMakepeace Thackeray into Chinese. Each of us translated about12,000words. The author isin charge of Chapter5: Contains Mr. Brock’s Autobiography, And Other Matters and Chapter6: Adventures of the Ambassadors, Mr.Macshane. During the translation process of these twochapters, the author met many problems, so the author will give more analysis.Catherine, A Story was written by William Makepeace Thackeray, an English novelist ofthe19th century. He was famous for his satirical works. In his early days, he primarilyworked for Fraster’s Magazine. Fraser’s published the work sometimes consideredThackeray’s first novel, Catherine, A Story, originally intended as a satire of the Newgateschool of crime fiction. however, it was not paid any attention by man of letters and historians,and there was no Chinese translation at present. Therefore, translating this novel is worthmuch. Moreover, Thackeray has a good command of all kinds of writing skills, which addsdifficulty to my translation. After the translation, I have learned much knowledge andexperience, which greatly benefit me.The author believes that translation is not creation. It should follow the principle offaithfulness and accuracy. Therefore, the translator should make good preparation for thetranslation. At the same time, They should be capable and responsible in translation. In orderto improve our ability, he translator needs to have a good mastery of English and Chinese, agreat deal of cultural knowledge. The translator must be skillful in using translation skills and have professional morality.
