This paper focuses the translation of It Can’t Happen Here (Chapter21-24) written bySinclair Lewis, which is a part of the translation project initiated by Henan University andForeign Language Teaching and Research Press.It Can’t Happen Here was published in1935. In this novel, Corpo State, PresidentWindrip controlled, symbolized Hitler’s Fascist. This novel describes the rise of Windrip, apopulist politician, who created his own militia, the Minute Men, paralleling Hitler’s SS. Itsplot centers on newspaperman Doremus Jessup’s belated realization of what is happening, andhis subsequent struggle against the fascist regim of President Berzelius “Buzz” Windrip.This novel, written by Sinclair Lewis in his later literature life, talked about the currentaffairs. And in2007, it won the Prometheus Awards. The plot, which the research centered on,was about the transition of the newspaperman, who turned from a Bourgeois intellectuals to afighter for freedom, dignity and life.During the translation, the translatability is limited, so the translation loss is inevitable,which can occur in the words, sentences, culture and aesthetics. The translation compensationcan do some work. At present, there is no agreed definition about the translationcompensation in academia, and the related researches are lagging. During the process, try touse the strategy to compensate the translation loss. By this practice, a conclusion can comeout: the translation compensation is feasible, and it’s worthwhile to use this kind translationstrategy.The translation report mainly contains five parts. Firstly, the paper gave a briefintroduction to Sinclair Lewis, It Can’t Happen Here and the requirements by the Press. Then,the paper presented some researches about the Translation Compensation. The third part presented the translation process, including the preparation work for the translation, thetranslation work and the later work. Besides during the translation work, from the threeaspects: linguistic, cultural and aesthetic aspects, the paper analyzed some examples from theprocess of translation to illustrate how to make translation compensation. In the fourth part,this paper talked about the professional and personal qualities a translator should acquire.Finally, the paper summarized the whole paper work.
