The studies of part of speech (POS) in modern Chinese grammar have beentrapped in the dilemma for a long time, which makes the POS labeling in dictionariesbecome a tricky problem. In most Chinese-foreign language dictionaries, especiallyin the Chinese-English (C-E) dictionaries, the controversies among the POS labeling, lexicographical translation and exemplification always exist, or the senses of an entryare often incomplete, because dictionary compilers blindly follow the POS labeled inmodern Chinese dictionary and do not based on the Usage-Based Theory (UBT).Problems exist in the POS labeling of C-E dictionary, but few in-depth analyses hasbeen done on this realm, not to mention the study of POS labeling ofdiscipline-related entries in C-E dictionaries. Only Wang Renqiang (2006,2009) andXiang Kaixi (2010) reveal that many problems exist in the POS labeling ofdiscipline-related entries in C-E dictionaries, but they do not conduct systematic andin-depth research on certain discipline-related entries, such as the sports entries.Based on the UBT, this thesis focuses on the sports entries in AChinese-English Dictionary (3rdedition)(2010)(hereinafter referred to as CED3)and probes into the POS labeling of discipline-related entries in C-E dictionaries. Atthe same time, based on the sports entries retrieved from CED3, we compare theirPOS labeling in other three dictionaries, namely, A Chinese-English Dictionary (1stedition)(1978)(hereinafter referred to as CED1), A Chinese-English Dictionary (2ndedition)(1995)(hereinafter referred to as CED2) and Contemporary ChineseDictionary (5thedition)(2005)(hereinafter referred to as CCD5) and find thefollowing problems:(1) the phenomenon of asymmetry exists in POS labeling, lexicographical translation and exemplification;(2) the POS labeling of some sportsentries shared by these four dictionaries are inconsistent with each other;(3) the POSlabeling of some sports entries in CED3are consistent with POS labeled in CCD5,but their lexicographical translation (definition) and exemplification are contradictory to the POS labeling. In order to solve all these problems, the analysesconducted in this thesis are based on the UBT and the data are downloaded fromCenter for Chinese Linguistics PKU (hereinafter referred to as CCL Corpus) and theInternet Corpus. This thesis not only has direct influence on the POS labeling of sports entriesin CED3, but also sheds a light on the POS labeling of discipline-related entries inC-E dictionaries. Meanwhile, it provides academic value for modern Chinesegrammar studies.
