Word classes (Parts of speech), as the basis of modern grammar, remain acomplicated problem in the grammar study. The POS labeling of words in dictionariesis also a rather longstanding and complicated problem. The correct POS labeling ofwords is of great importance to Chinese and Chinese-English dictionary compilation. In recent years, with the development of technology and the deepening of word classstudies, the POS labeling of the discipline words has attracted linguists’ attention.Inappropriate POS labeling or even irrational translation of electrical engineeringentries in dictionaries may not only severely affect the way people understand thisword but also negatively influence that people acquire the knowledge of this field. However, in the previous studies, no comprehensive studies have been conducted onthe entries of electrical engineering field. This thesis is intended to make a thorough investigation of the POS labeling ofelectrical engineering entries in A Chinese-English Dictionary (3rdedition, CED3forshort) from the perspective of the Theory of Norms and Exploitations (TNE) based onlarge well-balanced corpora, so as to deepen the Chinese POS studies as well as thestudies of POS labeling in Chinese and Chinese-English dictionaries. At the sametime, based on the entries in the electrical engineering field retrieved from CED3, wecompare their POS labeling in Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (6thedition)(2012)(hereinafter referred to as CCD6) and find the following problems:(1) thephenomenon of asymmetry exists in POS labeling, lexicographical translation andexemplification;(2) the POS labeling of some electrical engineering entries in CED3are inconsistent with their counterparts in CCD6. In order to solve all these problems, with the help of Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU (hereinafter referred to as CCLCorpus) and Internet-ZH in Sketch Engine, the thesis retrieves exhaustively theconcordance lines of all entries in the electrical engineering field with the purpose ofinvestigating their unmarked usage patterns, so as to determine their word classmembership. It is found that the POS labeling of entries in the electrical engineering field in Chinese-English dictionaries should be based on corpus-based usage patternsurveys, instead of being determined by discipline or meaning. This thesis will not only directly deepen the study of the POS labeling of entriesin electrical engineering field, but also supplies a solution to the POS labeling ofdiscipline entries in Chinese-English dictionaries.
