Based on referential expressions in excerpts from4editions of “Lao Qi Da” as its corpus,this article explores patterns and causes for their diachronic replacement, combined withresearch findings in Chinese dialects as a supplement. Seven chapters are therein as follows.Chapter1Introduction, which includes background for this selected topic,methodologies applied, and research materials quoted, while integrating research resultsalready achieved in this regard.Chapters2–5categorize referential expressions that have undergone replacements inthe corpus into indicative words, personal pronouns, interrogative pronouns and titles. Inaddition, several groups of words most typical in their replacements are given specialelucidation by making comparisons in their differences, in an attempt to explore causes fortheir replacements by searching the trajectory for their diachronic replacements in Dynastiesfrom Yuan, Ming, Qing (1279-1911), on the basis of their specific applications in those4editions along with other contemporaneous literatures. Meanwhile, this article also pries intotheir current distributing situation in modern Chinese dialects with the help of relevant researchfindings.Chapter6Patterns of their diachronic replacements in those4editions are summarizedbased on descriptions and comparisons elaborated on in former chapters. Specific causes fortheir changes are further discussed therein in both objective and subjective manners,particularly from the perspective of influence exerted by history, politics, economicdevelopment etc.Chapter7Conclusion, which points out research values, defects of this article, and thenecessity of methods applied to the description of referential expressions and trajectory of theirdiachronic changes in contemporary times, as well as of results achieved therefrom, inresearches on the evolution in modern Chinese vocabulary. Besides, inspirations are given toeffective means of combined researches between contemporary Chinese and modern Chinesedialects.
