Fairy tales which are indispensable partners while children grow up andspiritual guiders to form correct values have touched the hearts of children andsatisfied children’s love for fantasy by unrestrained imagination, vivid language andclear value guidance. But discourse analysis of fairy tales is rather scarce, and itmainly concentrates in critical discourse analysis and cognitive analysis of imagesused in fairy tales and stylistic features. As to the study of text-forming-mechanism,it is even less which is scattered in comparative analysis of cohesive devices betweenEnglish and Chinese fairy tales and rhetoric study. Moreover, children’s fairy talesdidn’t get full attention, let alone in-depth discourse analysis.Cohesion and coherence are not only basic concepts in discourse analysis, butalso impotrant topics in the domain. Researches about referential domains andmovements emphasise on the organization of the information in the text and the wayhow information in one sentence moves to the next one. This thesis will analyze thetext features of the fairy tales written by adults and children from four aspects:referential movements used in different referential domains, cohesive devices used indifferent referential domains and movements, referential movements used indifferent cohesive devices and sentence spacing of different cohesive devices tosummarize the text features of fairy tales and differentiate between fairy tales writtenby adults and children, especially to deepen the study of fairy tales written bychildren. The relation between referential movements and cohesive devises will alsobe illustrated, for example, the ellipsis of nouns, personal deixis and replication aremainly used in maintenance; replication is mainly used in onset and tie; differencecohesive devices are used in associative linkage.
