With the improvement of international status of China, she has played more and more important role in global stage. Mandarin fever has been on the swing around the world.the collision between China and western is beneficial for we to learn about different cultures and understand language idiomatically.especially for MTSCOL, have a better and profound understanding of the difference in Chinese and English idioms. Translation, which is born of the strong need of communication, has been challengedby deepening cultural globalization with its research focus shifting from the level of languageto the level of culture. Translation researchers have come to realize that translation, which is a cross-cultural communication event, involves not only two different languages but also different cultures. As idioms are a crystallization of human language and culture, special attention has been paid to idiom translation. Through the study on this subject, the author has found that both English and Chinese idioms own their distinct features, such as those related to geographical environment, historical background, customs and habits, religious belief and the like. Owing to these differences, there are different corresponding levels between English and Chinese idioms on the formal and semantic level.It is meaningful to learn more cultural elements of a foreign language.The thesis is divided into four chapters.first part is the introduction. Explain the relationship between language and culture、the impact of culture on conceptions、social customs and communication style as well as the difference in Sino-English cultures. Then comes to the first chapter, it discussed the categories and characteristics of Chinese and English idioms. The second chapter is the main part of this thesis. In this part the thesis elaborate the culture morals embodies in the two idioms in the aspects of colors、numbers、 animal、food、human body parts and literature works. The third chapter analyse the reason from the prospective of culture traditon、historical background、living habits and ethics as well as the geographical environment. The last chapter makes the summary of the techniques and methods of translation of the idoms, meanwhile put forward some translation strategies so as to avoid the semantic errors in cross-cultural communication process.Then the author makes a contrastive study of idiom translation employing several usually applied translation strategies—domestication and Foreignizatio、literal translation and free translation. Finally, the author has concluded that a translator ought to put cultural elements into consideration, contemplate its cultural implications between English and Chinese and use flexible translation methods to produce proper version.The author hopes that the thesis will serve to arouse foreign students’ interest in learning Chinese,cultivate intercultural awareness, and ultimately pave the way for efficient Chinese teaching to foreigh students. se and English idioms will benefits us a lot during the teaching process.
