Ever since detective novels were introduced into China, it has been included in thescope of the Mandarin Duck and Butterfly fiction. The similarity is such that it receives tremendouswelcome from the mainstream readers. Welcome to the extent of its position in the literaryhistory is debatable. Of course, a form of literature in the field of literature cannot have an exact value,because each author’s works varies, we are not able to immediately make a fair judgment. However,Cheng’s works, though some have been separated by half a century, but as long as it is read, readers willagree that even today, they are still able to attract a large number of readers. Its story is no less todaythroughout the popular detective novelist, like the works of Agatha Christie and others, but their plot isfilled with strong Chinese color. Moreover, these Chinese-style behind the plot, hidden the traditionalChinese cultural characteristics and values. This paper attempts to depart from Hawthorne Holmessetting the plot and narrative art, digging deeper in the author and his work behind the concept ofcultural values. Hoping to be able understand it through its values, allow us to more accuratelymeasure its value in the field of literature, but also there is the want to be able to provide for thefuture development of the Chinese detective novel.
