The story Romeo and Juliet has been revitalized with Shakespeare’s adaptation.Family feud has been highlighted, and hatred been deepened, moreover, Romeo andJuliet’s love becomes hard and poignant.From the theme perspective, the author did aresearch on Shakespeare’s early paly Romeo and Juliet to analyse the various imageswhich exist in the play and explored the relationship among the images, themes, andcharacters, revealing the role of family revenge. And then a conclusion that Romeo andJuliet can not simply be seen as a tragic love story, but in the strict sense, a revengetragedy, is drawn.This paper consists of three parts, namely, intruduction, body and conclusion. Theintroduction part briefly introduces Shakespeare’s adaptation and the situation of thedomestic and foreign research on this play. Chapter one discusses the popularity of therevenge concept in the traditional Western literary and its influence on Shakespeare’splay.Chapter two deals with the relationship between image and family revenge theme byanalysing the images in the play. Chapter three analyses the revenge through the dramaticplot and people’s attitudes under the shadow of family revenge and draws a conclusion thata play is the result of an overwhelming tragic effect in the theme conflict. Chapter four isabout the revenge extension and the classical writers’ approaches to it. The conclusion is asummary of the whole thesis.
