Contrastive Analysis Of English And Chinese Concrete Poetry From The Perspective Of Graphological Deviation

The discussion on Concrete Poetry is a topic commonly dicussed in related academic fields, and studies on Concrete Poetry are also widely carried out. Among the numerous researches on this topic, few have made a contrastive study between English and Chinese Concrete Poetry from the perspective of Graphological Deviation.This study is based on Wang Shouyuan’s classification of Graphological Deviation, and it intends to explore the similarities and discrepancies of Graphological Deviation in English and Chinese Concrete Poetry from a contrastive perspective. In this thesis,10English concrete poems and10Chinese concrete poems which employ different forms of Graphological Deviation will be presented in detail for the study. The thesis aims to address the following three topics:1) the similarities and discrepancies of Graphological Deviation in English and Chinese Concrete Poetry.2) The possible factors affecting Graphological Deviation in English and Chinese Concrete Poetry.3) The effects of Graphological Deviation in English and Chinese Concrete Poetry.This quantitative and qualitative study of the two corpora is conducted from specific to general:from making a study of the possible factors that generate the differences of Graphological Deviation in English and Chinese Concrete Poetry to the use of Graphological Deviation in English and Chinese Concrete Poetry.From the data summary and contrastive analysis, the author finds that Graphological Deviation in English and Chinese Concrete Poetry produces visual sensations. These visual sensations include foregrounding, creating images, and creating ambiguity. The forms of Graphological Deviation in English Concrete Poetry vary more than in Chinese Concrete Poetry. The possible factors which cause the similarities of Graphological Deviation in English and Chinese Concrete Poetry are unconventional style and enriching three dimensional forms. The causes of the differences of Graphological Deviation in English and Chinese Concrete Poetry are cultural distinctions and diversified ways of communication.The significance of this study lies in the fact that it has enhanced our understanding and appreciation of Concrete Poetry from the perspective of Graphological Deviation, and it has also explored the purpose of employing Graphological Deviation in English and Chinese Concrete Poetry. At last, the thesis suggests future research trends, as well as pointing out its own limitations.
