Both personality and writing of Wang Zengqi are unique. In1940th, he entered the literary palace in National Southwest Associated University and started his lifelong literary creation till the1990th. His novel writings are plain judged from their appearance but colorful inside. This thesis intends to explore the aesthetic richness of Wang Zengqi’s novels hiding under the plain appearance. The thesis is made up by three chapters, which discusses the aesthetic and literary historical values of Wang Zengqi’s novels from the content, form and meaning of the novels. The first chapter analyzes multiple implications stated in Wang Zengqi’s novels, which include the cadence of the novels’melody intertwined by pastorals and elegies, the original ecology of social life presented by comedies and tragedies, and the ideal personality of intellectuals outlined by the conflict and integration among Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. The second chapter states the form meanings and artistic origins of Wang Zengqi’s novels. The stylistic features of the language and structure of Wang Zengqi’s novels are mixed by sadness, joy and mockery, the origin of these forms can date back to Chinese classic aesthetic forms, proses of Ming and Qing Dynasty, the "May Fourth" spirit and other national traditons, as well as existentialism, stream of consciousness and other art thinking of western modernist. The third chapter discusses the literary historical value of Wang Zengqi’s novels. As a "lyrical humanist", he broke the discourse system of socialist realism and started the literary consciousness; as a "man of letters", he showed readers the charm of traditional culture, and enriched the experience of the modern conversion of the traditional culture; as a "scholar", his indifferent life principle provided a survival mode for intellectuals to live in the fickle market and cultural environment.Arguments of this thesis:Wang Zengqi’s novels are classical, not only because of the changes in the context of the times, but also because of their own aesthetic richness. The contents of Wang Zengqi’s novels are rich in implications, and the forms are unpolished but of long aftertaste. As a explorer and a synthesizer, Wang Zengqi takes an important place in literary history.
