Doris Lessing is one of the foremost contemporary writers, and she is thefirst women writer who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in Britain. DorisLessing produced more than50novels with various themes and writing styles inher creative careers. And it is undoubtedly that the science fiction is an essentialpart of all the works which provides a new perspective to understand Lessing’sliterary creation thoroughly.Lessing has created ten science fictions. Even though they didn’t exceed theinfluence of the novels such as The Grass is Singing and The Golden Notebook,their unique social value and practical significance are still worthy to study.Firstly,every era requests the literature form to reflect its characteristics. Andscience fiction has achieved considerable development and influence in20thcentury owing to its peculiarity in literature style. Meanwhile, the environmentaland ecological consciousness associated with the advancement of sciencetechnology has been reflected in science fictions more widely and profoundlythan ever. Doris Lessing’s concern and thinking towards the advancement ofscience technology and social development have been expressed in the form ofscience fiction. Secondly, it provides new perspectives and ample materials forDoris Lessing studies to study her science fictions as a whole and with theperspective of ecological criticism. In the end, the scenes of extreme environment,the imbalance social status and the lost spiritual world portrayed in Lessing’sscience fiction set off alarm bells to human society and spark people’s deeply thinking. Based on the intensive reading of the works, the subjects of this study,Doris Lessing’s science fiction, was analyzed by the theories of ecocriticism toreveal her worry to global catastrophe, quest for the social politics and troublethought to the fate of mankind from the dimension of man and nature, man andsociety, man and self. The origin of Lessing’s ecological thought formation wasexplored combining with her personal experiences. The uniqueness and value ofecological thought in Lessing’s science fiction were also discussed in thisresearch.
