On The Translation Of Lang Tuteng From Ecological Theory Of Tranalation Studies

Both Jiang Rong’s Lang Tuteng and Goldblatt’s Wolf Totem made a sensation after their publication. Lots of western newspapers and magazines made comments and praised the success of the translated version. However, until now, research on the English version is very few and most of it is based on the traditional theories, such as skopes theory and the rewriting theory, and is limited in the micro-aspects. While, by comparing the two versions, it is easy to find that the English version is quite different from the original one in the textual level. So research from macro-aspects is needed and can provide a different perspective in the field. Therefore, the thesis will make a tentative study on the success of Goldblatt’s Wolf Totem from perspective of eco-translatology.The thesis comprises five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction which concentrates on the significance, the research methods, and the structure of the study. The second chapter is literature review which can be divided into two parts. In the first part, the development of translation studies is briefly reviewed to make eco-translatology stand out. The second part is to describe the present research condition of the thesis. The third chapter is the theoretical framework which describes eco-translatology in terms of its background, basic terms and main viewpoints. Chapter four is the main body which offers an in-depth analysis of Goldblatt’s Wolf Totem from the perspective of eco-translatology. The analysis includes Goldblatt’s adaptation to the translational eco-environment, adaptive selection of the finalization of the target text and the evaluation of his Wolf Totem. On the basis of the chapter, the concluding part of chapter five draws two conclusions:firstly, translation is translator-centered, the success of Goldblatt’s Wolf Totem is determined by his adaptation to the translational eco-environment and his adaptive selection of the finalization of the text from dimensions of linguistics, culture and communication; secondly, domestication and foreignization are not absolute but are at different levels, and in different levels witnin one translation, one can have different choices.
