Study On Howard Goldblatt’s Translation Of Lang Tuteng From The Perspective Of Eco-Translatoloy

The Eco-translatology is an emer ging translation theory of late which was firstly proposed by Prof. Hu Gengshen in the early 21 st century in Hongkong. It is dif ferent from other traditional translation theories since it focuses on the integrality of the translation ecological system, at the same time, it produces some new de scriptions and explanations about the translation qualities, translation processes, translation standards, translation principles, translation methods, translation phenomena and translation ecological system from the perspective of the Eco-translatology and the narrative way of rewriting translation ontology. Hundreds of articles related to the Ec o-translatology have been published at home and abroad in recent years, even more than 60 universities and institutions have ap plied this theory into the journal papers and thesis writings. In 2008, scholars of the Qinghua University announced the Eco-translatlology as the national re search subject which was approved by the Chinese authority. Therefore, it is significant to make a research on the Eco-translatology in the translation field.Lang Tuteng is a semi-autobiographical novel which is the only one novel so far in the world depi cted and studied on the Mongolian wolves, so it is entitled as the “the epic wr iting of the Mongolian wolves”. This novel manifests the complicated relationships between the human and the nature, the humans and the wolves, the natural law and the wolf ’s law; meanwhile it reflects the im portance of protecting environment for the human beings by the vivid narration of the life of t he herdsmen and the wolves. Howard Goldblatt, as a fam ous American sinologist, is the translator of the English version Wolf Totem. After the publication of Wolf Totem by Penguin Press, it made a big sp lash in the western countries. Because of this book, Jiang Rong who is the author of Lang Tuteng, won the First Man Asian Literary Prize in 2007. Thus it is beneficial for the cultural communication to analyze a nd study on the translation methods and strategies of this acclaimed novel.This thesis applies the Eco-translat ology theory into the systematic analysis as well as the study of the Wolf Totem. The purpose of this thesis is to st udy how Howard Goldblatt selects the different translation strategies to adapt the translati on environment from the culture, the linguistic and the comm unicative dimensions of the Eco-translatology theory on the grounds of t he research methods of the com prehensive argument and exemplification. Moreover, it analyzes Howord Goldblatt’s Wolf Totem from the ev aluation criteria of the Eco-translatology which includes the degree of the m ulti-dimensional transformation, the reader’s feedback and the tr anslator’s proficiency. Finally, it draws a conclusion that firstly, Howard Goldblatt’s translation accomplished great success on the translation because he could choose suitable translation strategies and methods flexibly based on the dif ferent dimensions; secondly, as for the evaluation standards of the Eco-tran slatology, Howard Goldblatt could naturally adapt the transform ation and selection of the m ulti-dimensions and the dif ferent translation strate gies into the whole translation environment to achieve the harm ony of the dif ferent translation dimensions; meanwhile, the feedback of the readers also reflects the great success of Howard Goldblatt’s Wolf Totem.
