In this paper, dance pictures of the Qin and Han Dynasties were chosen as the research target, as the development of dancing art reached the second peak in the Qin and Han Dynasties. Since dancing was preferred and promoted by the governors, there was a new situation in which dancing art took various forms and dances were full of power and contents. There are many literature descriptions of the history of the Qin and Han periods, but they are incomplete and weak in intuitiveness. The author thinks that texts illustrated with pictures can make scholars know something about the musical dancing forms more intuitively. The author would like to carry out the research by Iconography of Dance and analyze the new artistic forms and dancing programs intuitively by pictures. The pictures give real descriptions of the dancing scenes of the Han Dynasty and show the aesthetic idea about dancing in the Han Dynasty. Those can be seen by analyzing the pictures and have important connections with the current visual culture. We can absorb nutrition from the pictures and assist with folklore studies to establish the vivid dancing language and preserve the momentary pictures permanently, so that the musical dancing pictures of the Qin and Han Dynasties will be more colorful. With the dance pictures of the Qin and Han Dynasties as the starting point, I carried out further research and analysis from the cross point of dancing and art to give scholars a more comprehensive, intuitive, systematic understanding of the dance of the Qin and Han Dynasties. The dance of the Qin and Han Dynasties requires great skills and beautiful gestures. The elaboration of this paper can be divided into the following parts:1. The classification of the dance pictures of the Qin and Han Dynasties was studied, including the traditional acrobatic dance and the court dance. The traditional acrobatic dance was elaborated from the four aspects, including the sleeve dance, the prop dance, the plot dance and the image dance. The court dance was elaborated from the two aspects:the impromptu dance and the social dance.2. Research on the dancing techniques in the dance pictures of the Qin and Han Dynasties was explained from the following five aspects:the sleeve-waving and waist-twisting dance, the feet-lifting dance, the double-S dance, techniques of the plate and drum dance and the techniques of the acrobatic dance.3. The research on the contents of the dance pictures of the Qin and Han Dynasty was carried out from these aspects:the sacrificial rites, customs, figure stories, fancies about the future world, the religious dance, the dance of the barbarian tribes.4. The research on the dancing style reflected in the dance pictures of the Qin and Han Dynasties was carried out from the four aspects:softness coupled with hardness, beauty combined with ugliness, unity of form and spirit and abstruse conceptions and the beauty of the sleeve-waving and waist-twisting. Many of the unearthed cultural relics of the Han Dynasty are image materials of the musical dancing. All the materials about the cultural relics of the Han Dynasties unearthed in various regions were collected in the forms of both texts and illustrations to look for and establish the artistic images of dancers. The diversity of dances, and their artistic features played an important role in the later development of dancing and especially the dancing of the Tang Dynasty. The pictures also provide us with precious materials to know something about the ancient dancing and learn from them in modern dancing.
