Research On Vocabulary Of Xi’an Dialect

Xi’an, situated in the middle of the Guanzhong Pingyuan, was once the political,economic and cultural center of ancient China. The term "Xi’an dialect" usually refersto the local speech of the Central Plains in northern Mandarin and it has long been afocus of academic concern. However, influenced by the previous traditional dialectstudies, which put too much emphasis on phonetics instead of vocabulary and grammar,thus the study of the dialect lexicon is very insufficient.Based on widespread fieldwork and the achievements summed up by previousstudies, this paper, through a comparative study in lexicon of Xi’an dialect andMandarin, aims to offer people an objective and all-around understanding of this dialectlexicon phenomenon.This paper consists of6chapters:Chapter One, General Introduction, mainly introduces the background andsignificance of selecting the topic, the research contents and methods, and the generalsituation of the research district.Chapter Two, Form Characteristics of the Lexicon of Xi’an Dialect. This chaptertries to reveal the form characteristics of the lexicon of Xi’an dialect by comparing thelexical differences in syllabic quantity, morpheme, affix, and the motivation of creatingwords in Xi’an dialect and Mandarin.Chapter Three, Meaning Characteristics of the Lexicon of Xi’an Dialect. Thischapter discusses the meaning characteristics of the lexicon of Xi’an dialect bycomparing the lexical differences in lexical meaning, grammatical meaning, andrhetoric meaning in Xi’an dialect and Mandarin.Chapter Four, Etymological Characteristics of the Lexicon of Xi’an Dialect. In thischapter, heritage words, borrowing words, the variation of words and new words in thesystem of the lexicon of Xi’an dialect are discussed and expatiated with examples froma synchronic perspective, with further analysis of the etymological characteristics of thelexicon of Xi’an dialect.Chapter Five, Category Glossary of Xi’an Dialect. Chapter Six, Conclusion. This chapter is intended to give a brief conclusion basedon the analysis and discussion in previous five chapters.On the basis of a comprehensive summarizing and reviewing of existing results,this paper compares and discusses the linguistic facts and fieldwork surveys of thelexicon of Xi’an dialect, which is hopefully of significance for the further developmentin this aspect.
