Cosmopolitanism Explain Of Local Tradition

T’ien Hsia Monthly is a kind of English magazine about thought and culture, which was born in Shanghai in the1930s.The circle of T’ien Hsia Monthly colleagues focused on the a group of Chinese intellectuals, who were proficient in Chinese and English, including John C.H.Wu(吴经熊)、Wen Yuan-ning(温源宁)、Lin Yutang(林语堂)、Yao Hsin-nung(姚莘农)、T.K. Chuan(全增嘏)、Zau Sinmay(邵洵美)Their emotional cognitive about Chinese traditional literature had changed because of their overseas education background and solid foundation of Chinese traditional literature. As a result, they translated and researched the traditional literature in the journal with a clear aim and depth. The translations and research of T’ien Hsia colleagues was actually a kind of cultural practice driven by Cosmopolitanism.With the approaches of humanism and cosmopolitanism, and theories of Chinese literature and comparative literature, the thesis have fully collected12volumes of the magazine and its related historical materials, outlined the publication’s outlook, summarized the achievement about the translation of classical Chinese literature, and examined the path of their translations and researches. The dissertation have consisted three chapters. Based on accurate and full original materials, the first chapter have traced and revealed the establishment and development process of T’ien Hsia colleagues, investigated the editorial aim and strategy, analyzed the characteristics of the publications and the colleagues’ worldwide pursuits. From the perspective of humanism, the second chapter has concretely investigated the translation activities about John C.H.Wu and Lin Yutang. This humanistic perspective is mainly embodied in the T’ien Hsia colleagues’ attention and depiction about ancient Chinese intellectuals and human nature, and interpretation of works of ancient literature works such as Tang poetry, the way of Lao Tzu, and so on. The third chapter has discussed the comparative study on the classical Chinese drama. It examined the journals’international academic view and research results, under the guidance of writers’consciously comparative consciousness.The dissertation have made the conclusion that the purpose of T’ien Hsia Monthly is not only to complete their objective "an interpretation of China to West" making western readers and scholars have more contact with Chinese traditional literature, but also to interpret local traditional literature with cosmopolite view in the process of the cultural output.
