A Study On English Translation And Introduction Method Of Chinese Art In T'ien Hsia Monthly

As an English magazine founded by the Chinese cultural elite,T'ien Hsia Monthly,which was founded in the 1930s and had been operating for six years(from 1935.8 to 1941.9),strives to contribute to the interpretation of Chinese culture to the West.The topics selected in the magazine are closely related to "literature,art,philosophy",and in recent years,some scholars have begun to study the content of their translations,but most of them are related to drama and literature,and there are few studies on the translation of Chinese art.This paper attempts to explore the translation method of Chinese art by using the translation methods in T'ien Hsia Monthly as the research object.According to T'ien Hsia Monthly which was reprinted by the National Library Press in 2009,this paper firstly summarizes all the articles related to Chinese art culture in the 56 issues of the magazine and then sorts and categorizes the obtained texts,then established the database.Next,with the text of Ti'en Hsia Monthly as the core,and combined with the column,content and the "paratext" materials of the magazine,the paper defined the topics of Chinese art which been chosen to translate and introduce in the Monthly.Finally,it expounds the causes of the translation of Chinese art in T'ien Hsia Monthly,and explores its enlightenment on Chinese culture "Going Out".The main content of the paper is divided into six chapters.The first chapter introduces the research background,research status,research framework and content,and research significance.The second chapter provides an overview of the publication of magazine and the main artistic viewpoints of it.Next,from the main columns of the magazine,the paper analyzes the characteristics of each column and the artistic content it contains,then classifies the translation form basic on the column features into three parts,such as brief introduction,translation and introduction,complete translation,etc.In the next chapter,the paper probes into the specific methods used by the T'ien Hsia magazine to translate Chinese art,for instance,storytelling,the combination of graphic and text,comparative research,citations,illustrations,etc.The paper gives examples to explain the advantages of using each method in a comprehensive and flexible manner.The fifth chapter explores the reasons of T'ien Hsia to choose to translate Chinese art themes and analyzes the limitations of magazine and their content,then analyzes the reference to contemporary Chinese art translation activities.The last chapter is a conclusion of this paper,in this paper,it also provides a series of problem in translating Chinese art.The paper concludes that though T'ien Hsia Monthly is limited by the conditions of the times,but the magazine can combine the Chinese and Western cultures with an international vision,and related to the characteristics of each column,and at the same time,it could use different translation methods to provide a reliable way for the general readers of the West to understand Chinese art.Combining the modern background of the"One Belt,One Road"initiative,and the innovative theory of"speaking well of Chinese stories and spreading Chinese voices",T'ien Hsia Monthly magazine can provide reference for the current Chinese art culture "going out".
