A Fuzziness Study Of Domesticatio And Foreignization In Translation

The dispute between domestication and foreignization has a long history, and hasbecome a subject of translation studies. With the socio-cultural exchanges, translationexchanges are more and more frequent. The requirement for translation activity is gettinghigher and higher. Translation as a communicative activity is not only the cultural exchange,also at the level of language and culture enriches the language and culture of the sourcelanguage and the target language. With the cultural turn of translation, translation studieshave also been entering on a new era, and the study of domestication and foreignization hasalso stepped into an age of multiplication. All disciplines and various theories have beenapplied to translation studies, greatly promoting and enriching the breadth and depth oftranslation studies. Fuzzy theory as a theory of cross-disciplines, has gradually beenintroduced to translation studies, and has attracted more and more attention in recent years.In terms of this background, this paper focuses on the following issues: at the culturallevel, what are the similarities and differences of domestication and foreignization? Is culturalforeignization and language domestication a misunderstanding of the relationship betweendomestication and foreignization strategies? Is it possible that domestication andforeignization in translation coexist in the text? What is the model and principles ofcoexistence? In the cultural turn of translation studies, what are the prospects of the fuzzinessstudy on domestication and foreignization? This study aims to make translators and readersrecognize the relationship between domestication and foreignization, abandon the dichotomyof either/or relationship, and give attention to all aspects in the translation process so as toavoid rigid translation or random translation.This study is based on a large number of documents and information, through thecomparative analysis, and speculative research methods, and carries out the descriptive andexpositive research. This study selects the different translated version of well-known booksThe Story of Stone and Harry Potter as a study text, using fuzzy theory to study howdomestication and foreignization strategies handle the situation in these texts.Through a comparative analysis of the different versions of the same original texts, thestudy shows:1) the use of domestication and foreignization strategies is cooperative efforts ofthe language, culture and translator’s own individual factors. It is bias to the discussdomestication and foreignization strategies from the language or cultural dimension separately.2) Domestication and foreignization strategies in translation are mutuallyreinforcing, and inseparable. The “cultural foreignization” and “linguistic domestication”approach was inappropriate, fragmenting the dialectical relationship of these two. In theselected texts, the application of domestication and foreignization strategy is reflected notonly at the language level, but also at the cultural level.3) This research also indicates thattranslation research should be done with dialectical analyses and rational justification frommultiple perspectives and multi-angle views.Chapter one is the introduction, which briefly introduces the research background,research questions, purpose and significance, and the structure of the thesis. Chapter Two isthe literature review to tell the history and current study of domestication and foreignizationat home and abroad, and indicates the existing problems and the disadvantage of the study.Chapter Three is the fuzziness study on domestication and foreignization to discuss thenecessity of the use of theory of fuzzy from language and culture level. Chapter Four is onthe principles of fuzziness study on domestication and foreignization. The basic principles ofdomestication and foreignization strategies are worked out with the guidance of the theory offuzziness. Chapter Five is on the domestication and foreignization strategies based on thefuzzy theory. Specific methods of operation are discussed and found out. Chapter Sixaddresses the goals of the fuzziness study on domestication and foreignization. Chapter Sevendiscusses the prospect of fuzziness study on domestication and foreignization. Chapter Eightis the conclusions. It discusses the major findings of this study, as well as shortcomings.The results show that fuzziness study on domestication and foreignization in translationprovides a new perspective, so that translators are no longer obsessed with keeping a non-stopdebate between these two. In the translation process, the translator should analyze fromdifferent angles and at all levels to grasp the various links and differences between the sourcelanguage and the target language so as to make the best choice of translation strategy.
