With the development of modern linguistic study, there appears a "culture turn" in translation study. More and more translators and scholars have realized the cultural influences on translation, and begun to take cultural, historical and sociological context into consideration when translating. Translation is regarded not only as a simple transferring activity of two languages, but also as a cultural communication.This thesis, based on Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory, intends to solve the following problems through an analysis of culture-loaded words in Eileen Chang’s self-translation The Golden Cangue:How the culture-loaded words are translated in the text? What’s the difference between Eileen Chang’s translation of culture-loaded words and that of other translators? Are Chang’s adoptions in line with Cultural Translation Theory? After careful study and analysis, the author of this thesis believes that Chang’s strategies for the translation of culture-loaded words are oriented to culture and greatly influenced by the subjectivity of self-translator and the reception of the target readers, enjoying some advantages. As Chang is both the writer and the translator of her own works, she could have a more thorough and more deliberate understanding of the original works than a conventional translator does, and she could render the culture-loaded words more vividly. As for the translation strategies for culture-loaded words, Chang resorted to some color words, onomatopoeias and four-word Chinese idioms relating to number in the text. Her adoption of such methods as literal translation plus adjustment to color terms about "Qing", word-for-word translation to four-word Chinese idioms relating to number without any annotation, and creation as transliteration to onomatopoeias, has served significantly as a bridge for the cultural gap, and greatly promote intercultural communication and integration between China and the West. As a self-translator, Chang was able to translate the culture-words in her works flexibly and at ease. From her translation of culture-loaded words, we can see that she cared a lot about cultural differences and the target reader’s reception, and paid great attention to the transference of culture, which is in line with Bassnett’s cultural translation theory.
