With the increase of comprehensive national power in recent years, people of China, a multi-ethnic country, have been increasingly emphasizing the traditional Chinese culture, including the typical traditional culture and art of each ethnic group. Ethnic Tujia is one of the minority groups in our country. With the passage of time, people of this ethnicity have developed culture and art of regional characteristics. The traditional wood carving patterns on beds, as a representative of the art of Ethnic Tujia, is the crystallization of the Tujia ethnic culture with fine crafts and art together.This thesis makes a relatively comprehensive study of the traditional wood carving patterns on beds belonging to Ethnic Tujia in the western part of Hunan Province in terms of types of patterns and image formation and construction. This research takes the first step in the study of this field, laying the foundation for the establishment of the theoretical system for Tujia wood carving patterns on beds. The findings of this research provide references and grounds for wood carving designs on furniture, help the preservation and further development of traditional Tujia wood carving, contribute to the study of traditional Chinese culture and open up new space for the development of wood carving on furniture.The writer adopts the methods of sample study and induction accompanied with image materials and relevant theories and methodologies in botany, zoology and pattern study in the study of types of patterns. By analyzing the various patterns of flowers, leaves and fruits in botany, the features of plant patterns in Tujia traditional wood carving on beds are induced. By analyzing the forms and shapes of auspicious birds and beasts, the characteristics of animal patterns in Tujia traditional wood carving on beds are induced. By analyzing the human images in ancient operas, historic fables and folk lore, the imagery features of human characters in Tujia traditional wood carving on beds are induced. By analyzing the features of the natural and folk landscapes in natural images, the landscape patterns in Tujia traditional wood carving on beds are induced. By analyzing the geometric and artifact patterns, other patterns in Tujia traditional wood carving on beds are induced.The writer mainly adopts the methods of analysis, comparison, statistics and a combined method of all of these in the study and research of the form and pattern of traditional wood carvings of beds of the Tujia ethnic minority in the western part of Hunan province, China. The writer summarizes the style and features of the furniture by analyzing the general patterns of the geometric composition and non-geometric composition of the furniture, with the help of the pictures and related materials, and under the guidance of methodology and principles prescribed by the study of art constitution and graphics. The writer summarizes the organizing pattern and general principles of the furniture by analyzing the organizing ways of separate patterns, suitable pattern, and continuous pattern. The author tries to find out the principles of combination of the graphs and the most frequently-used combination by analyzing the features of combination of the same kinds and of different kinds of the furniture.The conclusion:The traditional wooden carving of bed-functioning furniture of the Tujia ethnic minority has the following patterns, i.e. Monomer form, Side stereo configuration, Perspective stereo configuration, vertical configuration, plane configuration, static image, dynamic image, realist style, image style, separate type form, optimal form, shape suitable form, pectin suitable form, fringe suitable form, two sides continual form, four sides continual form, symmetrical form and equilibrium form.
