The news is the responsive reports that have occurred recently, or is happening, or have already occurred but have timely reports of value. With the rapid development of modern science and technology, the international communication is becoming more and more frequent. Understanding the assessment of the_same news and reporting from different countries, languages and cultures have become our way of understanding the world. English news plays a significant role in the transmission of information. Therefore, concise language must be used in English news to convey the objective and accurate information. As a means of interlingual communication, translation is a process of exchanging different language mechanisms and plays a more and more outstanding part in promoting the mutual understanding. Meanwhile, a great number of scholars begin to attach more importance to the nature of translation. However, the news translation under the traditional theories may not meet the needs, which have constrained its development. Fortunately, relevance theory provides a new perspective. It is a theory of interpretation of the language of communication that proposed by Sperber and Wilson in1986in the field of philosophy of language. Later, Gutt published his Ph.D. dissertation Translation and Relevance:Cognition and Context, in which he first applied relevance theory to translation study. English-Chinese translation is an intercultural communication which involves a process of ostensive-inference of the source language. Therefore, the optimal relevance between the two languages and cultures is the translator’s ultimate goal. Although relevance theory is not a translation theory, nor is it designed for translation theory, it can effectively explain the phenomenon of translation and guide the translation activities. The cognitive inference mechanism of relevance theory makes it a perfect option in translation with a dynamic nature.News translation provides people with new vision, and sets up a bridge for the cultural exchanges. As a process of news communication and interpretive use of language, E-C news translation involves two ostensive-inferential processes but not a simple process of encoding and decoding. This thesis may endeavor to study E-C news translation from the perspective of relevance theory. Through analyzing some news in English and their Chinese versions, we try to find out the applicability of relevance theory to news translation and provide some specific strategies in practical news translation so as to seek the optimal relevance between the source and target texts to achieve the optimal communication effect.Based on the principles of relevance theory and the relevance translation theory, the present study intends to explore a comprehensive study of news translation, taking English news texts as examples, and using an integrated methodology by adopting theoretical and empirical procedures. Due to the different cognitive environments of the source text readers and the Chinese readers, translators should adopt such translating strategies as addition, omission, adaptation and rewriting, so as to deliver the foreign culture to Chinese readers with the best communication effect. The research of this thesis may facilitate the present news translation practice, compensate for the deficiencies of the existing studies to some extent, promote the development of news translation theory, and solve the practical application of news translation in China.
