The thesis, titled "Tao, Appearance, and Description", deals with the issue of musical existence. The thesis, based on the research of numerous literatures related to musical existence, focuses primarily on the question of the origin of music which sustains the multi-existence of music, and further problematize it into the question of how does it exist? With the discussion of "Tao" and "existence", the thesis reveals that the issue of existence can be interpreted as priori existence (cannot be directly experienced) and phenomenon existence (can be directly experienced), while the subject of the event belongs to the former. In the discussion of the noumenon of music, the author considers that there is something lies in the music that makes it being the noumenon of music, moreover, the noumenon of music also bears the priori characteristic which cannot be experienced directly. Thus, the concentration on the ontology of music-as questioning its being-resort to the phenomenon existence of music that can be experienced (i.e. the phenomenon of musical emotion), because it’s the dynamic, crystallized, and experienceable musical existence, moreover, the phenomenon of musical emotion brings the being (music listener and sound of music) to the space that established by "Dasein" for the noumenon of music. At the end of the thesis, the study further discusses the possibility of description of the emotional appearance of music, and relates it with the study of music hermeneutics.
