The Panormia compiled by Ivo of Chartres (Yves de Chartres) is the mostimportant and extraordinary canonical collection in Pre-Gratian time. The Panormiahas a variety of legal resources, including Papal decrees, acts of Christian councils, tracts written by Church Fathers and bishops to excerptions from early canonicalcollections, readings from the Holy Scripture, secular laws, biographies of historicalfigures etc. The texts of the Panormia cover ecclesiastical corporate law, private law, criminal law and procedural law, which form an integrated internal system. ThePanormia is a systematic collection in which he canonical materials are placed undergeneral titles according to their themes. Its well-known prologue introduces thescholastical dialectics, which is used to harmonize adverse canon laws. The importantimpact of the Panormia exists in two aspects. First, it provides abundant theologicaland canonical materials. Second, it contributes an important method of instruction tothe course of canon law and theology. The research method of this thesis is a literature analysis. The thesis has sixchapters. The first describes Ivo’s life and career. In Chapter2, I study thedevelopment of western European canon law before Ivo, especially in the northernpart of France. In Chapter3, I summarize the different forms of legal resources in thePanormia by analyzing its inscriptions. In Chapter4, I study the legal system of the Panormia in details. In Chapter5, I study the scholastical dialectics used by Ivo. Thelast chapter concentrates on the historical influences by examining and comparingselections from Abelard’s Sic et Non and Gratian’s Decretum. This thesis has repercussions for our understanding of the intellectual and legalhistory in the Middle Ages.
