With the wide spread and globalization of the English language, English has takenon different looks in different countries which adopt English as their second language.The word “Englishes” proves that English is no longer what it used to be which limitsto American English and British English in the western countries. Varieties of Englishsuch as Singaporean English, Indian English and China English receive more andmore attention. China English has received much attention and study from manyChinese scholars on different aspects. The studies by the previous scholars haveshown differences between China English and Normative English on different levelsin linguistic research. As a variety of the English language, China English shows itsdistinctive features on the surface level of sentence structure that form the focus of thepresent study.The present thesis is a quantitative study based on the corpora, meanwhile it is aqualitative study for some phenomena and reasons are explored through examples. Bycomparing the international news reports in China Daily and The New York Times,differences and features are found and summarized as: compared with NormativeEnglish, more simple sentences and phrases are employed in China English instead ofsubordinate clauses; the placement of the adverbial clause in China English showsstrong tendency of postposition, while the frequency of initial and final adverbialclause in Normative English is more balanced. The reason for such features in ChinaEnglish lies in the different ways of constructing sentences in Chinese and English.This study hopes to be of help to the English learners and the English teachers inChina. At the same time, it may contribute to the study of China English in academicresearch.
