With the advancement of reform and opening-up as well as the development of globalization, China, as the largest developing country of the world, has been playing a more and more significant role on the international arena. The successes of2008Olympic Games and2010World Expo attracted ever-increasing attention from the world. The press conferences held by Ministry of Foreign Affairs after the conclusion of NPC and CPPCC are gaining even greater attention from all over the world. The Chinese premier and minister of foreign affairs will answer questions from media both home and abroad on the press conference, during which the interpreter will act as a bridge between the speaker and the listener. Due to the large scale and high standard of the press conference during two sessions, there are new demands for the interpreter and thus lead to a new study field of interpreting——the press conference interpreting (PCI).This thesis aims to analyze the process of PCI during two sessions with the guidance of Interpretive Theory and put forward several criteria for high quality interpreting. Meanwhile, the author carries out two categories of interpreting approaches, namely from linguistic level and discourse level. According to Interpretive Theory, translation is a communicative act with the aim to convey communicative messages. Based on the hypothesis of "deverbalization", Interpretive School established the triangular model of interpreting and divided interpreting process into three stages:comprehension, deverbalization and reformulation. Each stage affects the interpreter’s performance from various perspectives. But "sense" is always what should be translated. Meanwhile, Interpretive School also put forward the fidelity criterion for interpreting, which suggests the interpreter should be faithful to the intention of the speaker, the target language and the audience at the same time. In fact, such fidelity can only be achieved on the basis of the fidelity to "sense" thus it is, to some extent, a flexible and dynamic concept.Through analysis on interpreting quality influenced by the three stages of comprehension, deverbalization and reformulation, as well as study on previous interpretation evaluation, the author carries out three criteria for fine interpreting quality in the framework of Interpretive Theory. They are credibility, acceptability and sensitivity. By credibility, the interpreter should convey the overall sense of the discourse to the recipient accurately and completely. By acceptability, the interpreter should take the different cultural background into consideration and make the interpretation as native as possible. By sensitivity, the interpreter should precisely express the standpoint of government leaders to sensitive political topics and thus establish a good national image in front of the press. At last, the author puts forward two categories of interpreting approaches based on the interpreting quality criteria summarized in the precious chapter. From the linguistic level, there are information amplification, messages integration and syntactic reconstitution. From the discourse level, there are explanatory interpreting, affection communication and logical clarification. By putting Interpretive Theory into press conference interpreting practice, the author made the above-mentioned findings as a reference for PCI study in the future.
