Cohesion, as a semantic concept, is first marked by Halliday and Hasan inCohesion in English. Since established, cohesion theory has been paid much attention toby the linguistic and translation researchers. The rapid development of the textuallinguistics has also enriched the theories of translation. Translation activity consists ofthe understanding of source language and the creating of target language. As anecessary part of textual production, cohesion plays a significant role in translation.Under different culture backgrounds, English and Chinese belong to different languagefamilies, which lead to similarities and distinctions of cohesive devices between twolanguages. Translators should be familiar with the cohesive devices of both languages;otherwise, it would be not only influence the comprehension of source language butalso influence the production of target language. This thesis consists of three chapters. Chapter one is a brief introduction. Itintroduces the research background which summarizes the development of cohesiontheory and the significance of this research as well as the structure of this thesis.Chapter two is about the basic elements of literature review. Based on the cohesiontheory of Halliday and Hasan (1976), this part illustrates the concept of cohesion, classifications of cohesion and the relation between cohesion and translation. Chapterthree is the main part of the thesis. Stating with the contrast study between English andChinese, this chapter intends to discuss the different characteristics of grammaticalcohesive devices and analyze their influence on translation. At the same time, theauthor uses many examples from her translation practices to show the shift method andadjustment in translation and summarizes some suggestions to use cohesive devicesskillfully, which may provide a reference value to translation practice.
