Park Tae Won (1910~1986) is a modernist author, who represents Korean literature from the1930’s alongside Lee Sang. He left us literary gems such as Mr. Gubo’s Day, Riverside Scenery, and other important pieces. His writing style began as liberal, free of stereotypes, and a challenge to tradition and social convention. However it began to change throughout the Japanese colonial period. In the1940’s, he published historical novels. After entering North Korea during the Korean War, he enjoyed the honor of being considered the greatest historical novelist after creating a few historical novel masterpieces. Gapo Farmers Battle is considered the best of his work in North Korea. However, Is the Enlightened Land Getting Brighter? which was created as the first section of Gapo Farmers Battle, has not been fairly examined because it has been overshadowed by the Gapo Farmers Battle.I have researched "Is the Enlightened Land Getting Brighter" as an independent work, having explicit differences from the Gapo Farmers Battle. In this thesis, I have elaborated extensively on the theme, synopsis, structure, characteristics, and artistic achievements of the author through this work. I have concluded that this novel is a Bildungsroman, which deals with the history of development and the improvement of revolutionaries. In addition, I have investigated how the creative ability of a modernist author was expressed or displayed through the creation of this historic novel. It is my belief that this research into Is the Englightened Land Getting Brighter can contribute greatly to shedding more light on the entirety of Park Tae Won’s work.A riot caused by farmers in1894and considered a farmer led revolution in Jeonra Province. Gapo Farmers Battle is a Park Tae Won novel depicting this riot.
