W.H.Medhurst And The Chinese Version Bible

W.H.Medhurst, was the real leading missionary of London Missionary Society after the death of W.Milne and R.Marrison in the first fifty years of19th century in China. He organized the revise of Chinese Bible twice during the19th30s and19th50s, during which, he, John Robert Morrison, Prussian Missionary Gtzlaff and Karl Friedrich August tried to make the language style of Chinese Bible more idiomatical. Unfortunately, because of the criticism of a sinologist, Smuel Kidd, this experiment was stopped by the London Missionary Society and British Bible Society. Then, the revise of Chinese Bible and the English to Chinese translation of the Bible were suspended for years.The spread of Christian in China developed into a new stage.The Bible of Chinese version which was translated by R.Marrison became no longer suitable in the new times. The needs of a new Chinese version Bible was urgent. Both the British and American Protestant Missionaries wanted to work for a perfect Chinese version Bible together. However, the "Term Question "among the Missionaries caused the cooperation to fall apart:H.W.Medhurst, who was the chief sectary of the Committee preferred the "shangte" as the term of "God" while E.Brigeman, a American Missionary, like the "shen" more. This argument was the focus during the whole process of revise and translation of the Chinese Bible.
