Confucianism, especially Confucian ethical values, plays an important role in Chinese traditional culture. The ethics of filial piety is highly praised by Confucians, and the Chinese culture, in some sense, is the culture of filial piety. Shi Jing (the Classic of Poetry), as Chinese first collection of poetry, after the Confucius’s censoring poem, has become Chinese moral and political teaching material of the feudal society for two thousand years, and become Chinese guidelines of doing things and treating people. So Shi Jing (the Classic of Poetry) plays a role can’t be ignored in the process of Chinese nation’s developing to an ethical Society. This essay will take Shi Jing (the Classic of Poetry) as the object of study, basing on the ethics of filial piety. And I will analyze the connotation of the filial piety in the early time and its development from the text and study gradually the reasons, roles, the relationships between the Rites of Zhou and its impact on all posterity, so that we can have a more comprehensive and profound emotional and rational knowledge on the ethics of filial piety at last.
