A Study About Shih Seng-yu’s Life And Frienfship

This thesis chooses the life and friendship of Shih Seng-yu’s as the study object. It attempts to investigate the time and process of his life, such as being a monk, learning, teaching vinaya, building the Buddha statues and so on, based on all kinds of literature about Buddhist and historical biography. Based on carding and applying the original material and previous researches, the paper introduces and investigates the creation and circulation of Seng-yu’s writings. Further, it mainly examines four creation processes of "Compilation of Notes on the Translation of the Tripitaka" through editions and the text itself, namely, the initial stage, the circulation, the enlargement and the careless revise.Having studied the relationship, characteristic and influence between the emperors, monks and him, this thesis tries to bring out the academic activities and ideologies of Seng-yu. Then, it analyses its historical origin, influence and connotation, which include the propagation mode, the characteristic of development and the spirit of the time in the special period when Buddhism was introduced into China. Finally, this thesis demonstrates the remarkable impacts of the popularization of Buddhist faith on Chinese traditional culture, thoughts and literature, and also describes the development of Buddhism with Chinese characteristic.
