Song Shengyu (1910-1966), formerly known as Qing Lian, who styled himself as Lian Qing and apricot master, was from Shanghang County, Fujian Province. He is the representative of Chinese flower-and-bird painters and art educators in Southeast from1930s to1960s. he was also a teacher in Art Department of Fujian Nomal College (now Fujian Normal University). Song Shengyu had devoted his whole life to art creation, research and art teaching. He extracted goodness of various painters of various styles in his freehand flower-and-bird paintings including south brush work and sea rhyme. At the same time, he also achieved great accomplishments in poetry, calligraphy, painting and printing, which not only inherits the tradition of freehand brush work but also integrates innovative consciousness. Many of his works reflect the realities and his own inner world, which form a unique art style. He was a veritable art educator as well. During the40years of his teaching career, he cultivated numbers of traditional Chinese painters and art operators for Fujian Province, Guangdong Province, Hongkong and Taiwan, many of whom have become backbone in the realm of art. Therefore, the incisive and systemic research of Song Shengyu’s flower-and-bird paintings and his art teaching has its practical significance.This study mainly includes the following three aspects:first, to clarify Song Shengyu’s artistic growth process; second, to explore Song’s painting styles of different periods and analyze his representative works; third, to incisively analyze and discuss Song’s teaching idea and qualities.
