In recent years, private universities develop vigorously, which has become an indispensable part for higher education. The advantage for private universities is that some majors in a hot need are offered. However, the qualities of the students are declining and there is lack of qualified teachers. A common phenomenon is that students are not well motivated in English learning and their English level is quite low. All this makes the English class hard to carry out effectively. This study is made in college English class under task-based approach in a private college--Yongjiang University to explore an effective way of English learning.Based on the theory of constructivism, English classroom teaching under task-based approach is adopted in the experimental class. At the same time, traditional teaching method PPP is used in the controlled class. By this way, analysis and comparison can be made between the two classes. The subjects involved in the study are freshman students from twodifferent classes in Grade2011of Yongjiang University. There are54individuals in the experimental class and40in the controlled class. In this study, quantitative and qualitative analysis are involved. The material collected includes questionnaires, interviews, results of examinations and observation on the students. The data from questionnaires and examinations are depicted and analyzed with the use of Excel2003. In order to probe the major findings obtained from the quantitative study, data gathered from interviews and classroom observations were analyzed on a qualitative basis. Results of the study indicated that:1. Students’English learning attitude towards TBA is positive.2. Students from experimental class made obvious progress in their English proficiency.3. There are challenges for both the teacher and the students under TBA. For the students, group work challenges their practical abilities in using English as their English level is generally quite low; while for the teacher, to arouse students’enthusiasm in group work is a big challenge,This thesis includes five chapters:The first chapter is the Introduction. Chapter2provides theoretical frameworks and literature review. Chapter3describes research design. Chapter4analyzes the results and findings of the study, and Chapter5makes conclusion and gives suggestions.
