An abstract, always considered as the window of an academic paper, is objective andaccurate overview to help the reader understand the main content of the paper quickly, andalso become an important tool for researchers abreast of the latest academic trends, to presentresearch results to the peer. In recent years, people pay more and more attention to the articleabstracts, including the academic norms of summary writing, the use of genre analysis todescribe the language features and structural characteristics of a field of abstracts, and the useof the theory of comparative linguistics in comparative study of cross-language. But there arefew corpus-based comparative studies on both Chinese and English abstracts, and there arealmost no comparative studies on Hedges in the academic abstracts involved in twelvesubjects on science. Based on the fundamental theory of Contrastive Linguistics and genreanalysis, this paper is aimed to study the generality and difference in the Hedges abstracts ofChinese and English of scientific Periodicals from the three angles: pragmatic, grammar andsemantic. Besides in order to help the reader improve their skills in abstracts writing, thepaper also expound the generality and difference from the angle of Chinese and Englishculture and thinking characteristic. This thesis is divided into five chapters, each chapter is organized as follows:The first chapter is an introduction,an overview of fuzzy linguistics, English hedges, hedges language research overview in English and Chinese science and technology text. Theresearch focus is on what has been done on the science and technology test hedges Englishhedges semantics and pragmatics characteristics, and ignore the text of Chinese science andtechnology hedges characteristics of research, especially in the comparative study of hedgesin English and Chinese science and technology abstracts few.The second chapter is the study design, respectively, the theoretical basis of this study(including genre theory and contrastive rhetoric theory), corpus and hedges word table toestablish. First, the corpus of this thesis is based on English and Chinese scientific abstracts, from the national center for scientific literature science and technology core journals to ensurethat the corpus in the academic field representative and authoritative. Language-step theory, according to swales corpus division, statistics, summed up the four language step(the move). Finally, the English and Chinese fuzzy restrictions words table the establishment, it is to be supplemented to improve by Ken Hyland, summary of the previous achievements made inorder to ensure its accuracy, gone through a number of deletion and finally ok.The third chapter is the vague the pragmatic type of comparative analysis. Prince oflanguage type to be marked with type theory of language of English hedges. Application software statistics of frequency of use of the English and Chinese a variety of the pragmatics typehedges, to observe the characteristics. The results show that hedges in English science andtechnology abstracts more inclined to directly ease the type. Chinese science and technologyabstracts want hedges tend to indirectly ease the type. The four chapter is a comparative analysis of the type of the syntax of English hedges. This chapter in accordance with English and Chinese grammar theory to mark the type of thesyntax of English hedges. Application software the statistics of English and Chinese syntaxtype hedge frequency of use, and summarizes the use of the characteristics. The results showthat hedges in English science and technology abstracts tend to nouns, adjectives and modalverbs.Chinese science and technology abstracts hedges want to tend to the verb, adverbandmodal verbs. The fifth chapter is the comparative analysis of semantic type of English hedges.Thechapter in accordance with Chen Linhua and Alan li india(1994)semantic type theory,to markthe semantic type of the English hedges. Application software statistics hedges frequency ofuse of a variety of semantic types in English and Chinese, and summarizes their usecharacteristics. The results show that hedges in English science and technology abstracts tendto quality-oriented. Chinese hedges tend to way criteria for type. The results show that the use of hedges in English and Chinese science and technologyjournal abstracts with more different. In comparison, the use of the English summary hedgesare more consciously, richer, and more effective. The reason id mainly because the Englishand Chinese have their own genre characteristics, cultural backgrounds, ways of thinking andlanguage features.First of all, the English native speakers have a strong awareness of thelanguage step, write a complete summary, so more frequent use of the hedges. Secondly theEnglish science and technology writers emphasis on the objectivity of academic researchresults described, easy to accept and attitudes midly. Again, the English native speaker tendto the analytical, linear thinking mode. Because Chinese native speakers’ spiral mode ofthinking. English hedges tend to ease the type and quality-oriented, Chinese hedges tend to indirectly ease the type and manner criteria type. finally, the English are noun superiority typelanguage, Chinese belongs to the verb superior type language. So English hedges distribute innouns, adjectives, modal verbs. Chinese hedges distribute in verbs, adverbs and can-verbs.
