Language Features And Strategies In Translating Abstracts Of Scientific Papers

English for science and technology(EST) usually refers to the English language used in natural science and technology. With continuous development of the world,this kind of English becomes more important than before. Scientific and technological English, of course, has its own language features, such as frequently uses of passive voice, professional vocabularies and terminologies, to ensure its own objectivity and simplicity.Along with the promotion of international relations, more and more scientific researchers hope to publish their own academic papers in the core journals. Most scientific and technological English papers are long, which contain a lot of professional information. However, English abstract is very valuable. Because it is a basic part of a paper, and people can easily get the key information from this place.This is also the reason why the English abstract, as a key part of the whole passage,could be so essential. But, most researcher's English level and ability to write essays in our country still need to be improved. A lot of English abstracts are based on the literal translation of Chinese abstracts, which would lead to some problems like grammar mistakes, Chinese English expressions, and so on. Therefore, it is of great significance to know clearly the language features and strategies in translating of scientific abstracts.Through participating in the abstract translation project of The Natural Gas Technology and Economy, the author intends to provide reference materials and the corresponding translation strategies for some similar translations.As a project report, this paper describes the whole process of the abstract translation project including preparation work and translation work. The author begins with the language features of scientific abstracts, and then explores the requirements of the translation project. Based on the detailed analysis of the source text and target text, this paper also summarizes some translation standards and strategies applied in translating scientific abstracts, which can be references for the future translation ofscientific abstracts.In addition to the introduction and conclusion, the thesis is divided into four parts:Chapter One describes the basic things like project background information, the requirements of the task, and some preparation work before the practice; Chapter Two analyzes the language features of scientific abstracts from three aspects through a comparison between Chinese and English texts; Chapter Three is the most important part of the whole essay, which not only emphatically analyzes the translation strategies in the translation process, but also introduces the contents and the main functions of relevant methods. In this chapter, a large number of translation examples have been used as proofs; Chapter Four reviews the various problems encountered in the translation process, and sums up translation experience and findings.
