‘X or not X’ is a very common structrue used in the question sentence of modernChinese. This structrue tries to express both the ‘X’ and ‘not X’, two opposite meaningin one question, and it is not only popular in speaking Chinese but also in writingChinese, such as ‘go, or not to go’,‘high, or not high’. Depending upon the definitine ofthe X and the position of the structrue in the question, the use of the structrue a littlecomplicated. This paper just wants to study the ‘X or not X’ structure in questionsentence. The structure is composed by ‘X’ and it’s opposite(negative) meaning ‘not X’,the first popuse of those question wants the answer to choose one of the two meaning,‘X’, or it’s opposite(negative),‘not X’. In this structrue, the poticular ‘or not’ is theconstant part, this part is very important and never change, comparatively, the part Xcan be different kinds of words, such as verbs, abjectives, nouns, prepositions, and evenphrases. Moreover, this structure can be used as predicate, object, adverbial adjunct,complement in a sentence, and it can also be a independent sentence itself. This paperwill anylyze this structure in the views of syntax, semanteme and the use of language,and then use method of comparative analysis to analyze the ‘X or not X’ and ‘X orhaven’t X’ structures. The innovation of this paper is the study of the different functionsin different conditions of the structure, furthermore, the circumstances when thestructure is used as a strong hint.
