This thesis which based on numerous reality-based corpuses has made a comprehensivestudy and analysis on adverbial of modern Chinese from the general rule,the phenomenon oftransposition as well as the formation mechanism of adverbial.Firstly this thesis reviews the present research situation of modern Chinese adverbial,and adopts a basic method which takes the predicate as center to classify adverbial semanticcategory. The adverbial is divided into seven categories. It has studied the three positions ofsingle adverbial in detail which are at the head of the sentence,between the subject and theverb,at the end of the sentence,analyzed the transposition of the individual adverbial,andfound the general word order mechanisms of single adverbial and factors which influencetransposition. Then it focuses on the study of the general rule of multiple adverbial’s wordorder. When studying multiple adverbial,it analyzes different patterns of composition inaccordance with the nature of adverbial, and comes to its general rule.It also deeply analyzesthe phenomenon of vacillation of partial adverbial’s word order. This thesis applies modernlinguistic theories to explain the formation mechanism of multiple adverbial’s word order,andpoints out the principles that impact the word order. Finally it analyzes the semanticrelationships among the adverbial elements,gives an in-depth analysis of adverbial wordorder with functionalism.The paper has analyzed why the adverbial cannot be preposition,the reasons aresemantic expression,adverbial and predicate relations,adverbial relative independenceindifferent locations,the independence of voice,as well as by other factors,such as adverbialconstraints of certain aspects of the adverbial front. Also inspected formal change of someadverbials after being put infront of the subject,and from the perspective of rhythm andconition,the changes were explained.
