A Study Of Zhu Shenghao’s Translation Activities From The Perspectvie Of Translation Ethics

Ethics is the study of the principles governing human interpersonal relationships and their corresponding moral principles. As a social and cross-cultural activity concerning many relationships of participators, translation activity is essentially an ethical conduct and it needs the constraint of ethics. Since the proposal of translation ethics by French translation theorist Antoine Berman in the1980s, many scholars abroad and at home have devoted their energy to the study of translation ethics and put forward different views on translation ethics. Of all these ideas, Chesterman’s view is regarded as the most systematic and representative. Chesterman proposed five models of translation ethics, namely, ethics of representation, ethics of service, ethics of communication, norm-based ethics and ethics of commitment. His "five models of translation ethics" provides a new perspective for translation studies.Zhu Shenghao is a well-known translator for his successful translation of Shakespearean works. His translation motivation, translation attitude, translation thought and his works are all praised by later generations and appeal the attention of many researchers. This thesis analyzes Zhu Shenghao’s translation activities from the perspective of Chesterman’s five models of translation ethics and translator’s personal ethics. It aims to explore Zhu Shenghao’s translation ethics and make some contribution to translation studies at the same time.This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is a brief introduction of the whole thesis. Chapter2is an overview of translation ethics. Then, the third chapter of this thesis concentrates on the analysis of Zhu Shenghao’s activities from the perspective of translation ethics based on Zhu Shenghao’s translations of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. In Chapter4, the author explores the factors influencing the formation of Zhu Shenghao’s translation ethics. The conclusion part. Chapter5, provides the summary of the whole thesis, states the limitation of this research and makes some suggestions for further studies.
