As the longest artificial river in China, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal (BHGC)is a great water conservancy project of ancient China with a total length of1794km.Since a long time ago, the environment around the BHGC has been destroyed due to theunreasonable urban development and utilization. The culture of the BHGC is alsodisappearing because of the lack of people’s attention. All these negatively affect theongoing world heritage inscription of the BHGC to some extent. Therefore, cities alongthe BHGC have adopted a series of measures for exposition and protection and some ofthem have several achievements. Overall, however, many problems still exist both in thework of protection and inscription of the BHGC. In this paper, the current status of theBHGC and the problems encountered in the inscription process are described; theimportance and urgency of the landscape design study of the BHGC under theinscription background are analyzed; both the domestic and international experiences ofcanal landscape governance are summarized. Trying to apply the theories of landscapeaesthetics and landscape ecology, a scientific and rational landscape designmethodology for the BHGC is studied. Taking the landscape design of Liaocheng (inShandong Province) section of the BHGC for example to discuss, this paper points outthat the landscape design of the BHGC should focus on two aspects: the repairmen andregeneration of the ecological landscape, the succession and development of culturallandscape. The aim of this paper is to improve the ecological environment andlandscape of the BHGC through transformations, promote the culture of the BHGC,enhance the quality of cultural meteorological and humanities of the cities along thecanal, and make contributions to the inscription of the BHGC.The specific contents of this paper are as follows:The first part is Chapter1which gives an introduction of the research includingbackground, significance and related topics both domestic and international. The secondpart consists of4chapters which form the body of this paper: Chapter2makes adetailed introduction to the BHGC; Chapter3describes the status of the inscription ofthe BHGC and analyzes the constraints of the BHGC in the process of inscriptioncombining with the application criteria of the World Heritage Site; Chapter4illustratesthe importance and urgency of the BHGC’s landscape design under the inscriptionbackground; Chapter5takes Liaocheng (in Shandong Province) section of the BHGCfor example, firstly analyzes the preliminary results of the status governance ofLiaocheng section, and then points out the problems exist in the protection andutilization of the Liaocheng section. Respecting the existing reform suggestions andtrying to apply the principles of landscape aesthetics and landscape ecology, Chapter5also gives a detailed planning and specific measures on poroceting and exploring theLiaocheng section of the BHGC. The third part of this paper is Chapter6whichconcludes and summaries the whole paper. The landscape design of the BHGC is an effective measure to improve the urbanenvironment and enhance the urban quality. It is also the emphasis of the BHGC’s worldheritage inscription. Under the inscription background, the landscape design of theBHGC should focus on two aspects: the reparation and regeneration of the ecologicalenvironment, the cultural landscape heritage’s continuation. These two aspects areessential to the ultimate goal of achieving sustainable development along the BHGC.
