The Grant Canal’s application for the world cultural heritage has entered the final stage. The cultural heritage of the Grant Canal is received sustained attention. The same attention has also been paid onto city cultural heritage along with the rapid development of urbanization. As a famous canal city, Wuxi is facing these two issues.Urban design is a planning project of a complex、large scale, which involves many aspects. Research on the historical and cultural heritage of the design area will provide basic data for urban design and have an impact on the corresponding planning idea、 content and even result.The paper is mainly composed of four parts. The first part is to illustrate the general information of the scope、nature and rivers in the studied area; the second part is to grasp the historical connotations of Wuxi urban development through studying the change of the Grand Canal in Wuxi and the relationship between the Grand Canal in Wuxi and urban development; the third part is to have a basic understanding of the quantity、grade、status and value of the cultural heritage of the studied area through the compilation、classification of the data and the recognition of its value of the cultural heritage resources of the studied area, providing relevant information for the next phase of urban design.Finally, the paper discusses the issues related to the future of cultural heritage protection in Wuxi based on the research on the cultural heritage resources within the studied area, the review and summary of conservation of cultural heritage in Wuxi and own experience in the study of cultural heritage research in this city.
