Chinese idioms, which are a kind of fixed expressions, are followed by humansocial intercommunication in the long process of historical and cultural development.Large quantities complete meaning, plain and concise words, and the stereotypedstructure are basic features of Chinese idioms. This paper first clearly identifies theposition of idiom teaching in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL). Asan important teaching component of TCFL in the deep or mature stage, idiom teachingis of unique significance and value in the TCFL, which is reflected in the followingthree aspects: firstly, idioms are a special type of Chinese vocabulary systems; secondly,idiom teaching is effective and helpful to improve students’ ability of expression; thirdly,idiom teaching is in favor of the whole improvement of the level of TCFL. Based onthis and connecting with the practice, the author deeply analyzes the problems existed inthe current idiom teaching of TCFL. First, the idioms embodied in the syllabus andteaching materials lack normative. Second, not enough attention on idiom teaching ispaid in the language testing of Chinese. Third, idiom teaching in TCFL is short of utility.At the end of this paper, the author makes pointed countermeasures and suggestions toidiom teaching in TCFL: firstly, make a proper arrangement to the quantity and order inthe materials and syllabus of idiom teaching; second, further enhance the semanticanalysis of Chinese idioms; third, pay attention to contextual teaching and culturaldifferences between Chinese and foreign languages; forth, choose appropriate teachingmethods and strategies flexibility to different students.
