| The thesis is based on the research perspective of the literary phenomena of Chinese contemporary times especially recent thirty years. The development of ugliness as the aesthetic concept is taken as the basic thread. It begins with the macroscopical investigation and logic analysis of the history. The evolution of aesthetic idea of appreciating ugliness that is showed in the Chinese contemporary literature is revealed. The deep causes such as society, politics, culture, and so on, which are showed in contemporary literature by ugliness, are analyzed. Besides, many problems existing in present appreciating ugliness, coping strategies and realistic prospect are taken into account.The full text is divided into four main sections.In the introduction, the present situation of the research on ugliness as aesthetic concept in China and the West is mainly surveyed and analyzed. From the ancient Greece to the middle of the nineteenth Century, loving beauty, advocating beauty and upholding beauty was the main topic in thousands of years of Western civilization, and "ugliness" as a vassal and foil was present around the beauty. In modern times, the status of "ugliness" gradually improved and the publication of the book Aesthetics of Ugliness written by Rosen Kranz marked the "ugliness" to become an independent aesthetic category. In the twentieth Century,"ugliness" penetrated into the people’s aesthetic consciousness and literature and art from all aspects. Though compared with that of the West,"ugliness" has distinct fate in Chinese culture, the theory research on "ugliness" is mainly after1980s.The first part with the topic "Ugliness" as the Transformation of the Aesthetic Concept, takes the development of "ugliness" as a aesthetic concept as the basic thread, and diachronically analyzes the historical evolution of "ugliness" in Chinese and western aesthetics history."Ugliness" has different characteristics in Chinese and western aesthetics history, but on the whole, it has experienced such three stages as the bud, formation and development, and it has also gone to the center from appendage and foil borderland of beauty, and been equal to beauty.The second part with the topic Appreciating Ugliness:"Ugliness" Is Presented in the Contemporary Literature, mainly analyzes the presentation of "ugliness" in contemporary literature creation especially in the novels in recent thirty years. Based on the development of "ugliness", the dynamic evolution of appreciating ugliness in contemporary literature, especially in the novels in the past thirty years is divided into three stages:from the end of 1970s to the beginning of1980s, the middle and late1980s, and after1990s. In addition, the present situation of research on appreciating ugliness and the existence condition of appreciating ugliness are also discussed. As for the definition of "appreciating ugliness", the author uses the definition given by Mr. Luan Dong in this article, namely "from the perspective of subject, appreciating ugliness refers to the sum of such capabilities as judgment, evaluation, appreciation, criticism, tolerance, transformation, and so on to ugliness given by the individuals; From the perspective of object, appreciating ugliness refers to grasping the evolution of the essence and shape of ugliness in the society and history, including the aesthetic activity itself of appreciating ugliness as object."The third part with the topic The Theoretical Analysis of the Presentation of "Ugliness" in Contemporary Literature, mainly analyzes the deep reasons why "ugliness" is presented in contemporary literature such as society, politics, culture, and so on from the theory side, and it is analyzed from several aspects such as the modern western theory, the concepts of modern western literature, the contemporary Chinese realistic context, and so on.In the conclusion, the problems existing in present appreciating ugliness, coping strategies and the prospects for the future are analyzed simply. |
