This thesis makes an analysis of the typecast characters in Henshui Zhang’s novels ofnational calamity about Chongqing. By analyzing the typecast characters and sorting out thegroup images during the period of the anti-Japanese war, we read the outstanding novelist’sthought card, explore how the pop novel writer controls the readers, and probe into theChinese thoughts and cultures.The introduction gives an explanation of the special academic significance of theresearch on Henshui Zhang ’s novels of national calamity, and defines the scope of theresearch.The body of the thesis is composed of three chapters. The first chapter deals with thetypecast characters in Henshui Zhang’s novels of national calamity. It sorts out the charactersin Henshui Zhang’s novels of national calamity, who look similar but with differences, or lookdifferent but with similarities. In his novels he describes the various characters such as theAnti-war Lady, Mr. Grandet, the intellectuals, the merchants in the period of national calamityand the female images during the period of the anti-Japanese war.The second chapter probes into the characterization of the typecast characters. It analyzeshow and why he writes about the typecast characters, and what features his characterizationrepresents. The first section studies the characters from the perspective of narratology. Thesecond section explores the author’s writing intention and the influence of his writingconditions over his writing. The third section elaborate the three features of thecharacterization in Henshui Zhang’s novels, including being of no popularity, often usingauthentic effects, and applying the demand theory.The third chapter discusses the relation of the typecast writing to cultures. At thesuperficial level, the characterization of the images frequently appearing in Henshui Zhang’snovels is associated with the local culture of Chongqing. At the middle level, it is closelyrelated to Henshui Zhang’s cultural qualities and concepts. At the deep level, it is connectedwith the deep-level cultural structure of Chinese traditional culture.The conclusion elaborates Henshui Zhang’s view on the typecast characters in his ownnovels of national calamity. The thesis points out that we are supposed to have various kindsof understanding of the phenomenon from the perspective of the politics, cultures, writing techniques, and art. Furthermore, the thesis brings forward the prospects for the future studyof Zhang Henshui’s novels of national calamity.
