The new culture movement influences all aspects of society, especially the people’s spirit. Literature revolution is the main content of the new culture movement, which has a strong impact and great subversion to the traditional Chinese literature. Under the influence of the literature revolution, Liu Bannong who made a living wandering in the literary world realized that literature reform would be inevitable; In response to the call of Chen Duxiu and Hu Shi, Liu Bannong published two articles My View of Literature Reform and Innovation of Poem’s and Novel’s spirit in the New Youth, which presented his own unique understanding. With his deep cultural accomplishment, he made full use of classical Chinese literature and foreign literature to set up his theory of new poetry by virtue of his own unique aesthetic taste and vision. Besides, he practiced his theory on the battlefield of poetry gallop. He published Separated by a Layer ofPaper and Image of One Full Year ofXiaohui’s Life in New Youth in January of1918, which provided the reference in form and opened the situation for the creation of the vernacular poetry. Hu Shi, Shen Yinmo and he were called the early Three Vernacular Poets.According to the needs of the times, Liu Bannong put forward the view of "destroy the old rhyme, build up new ones" and "Build up New Tones" and "Increased Verse" about new poetry in pursuit of truth as a aesthetic standard to enrich the content and form of new poems. Advocating deriving nutrition from the ballad to open new ways of creating poetry and perfecting his poetry theory in the future, Liu Bannong published his collected poems, including some well-known poems such as How Could I Not Miss Her? Deep study in Liu Bannong’s Poetics and poetry contributes to our understanding of his contribution in the changing process of old style poems to vernacular poetry and makes us more objectively realize his position in the history of Chinese new poetry.
