An Analysis On The Design Features Of The Kenkyusha Dictionary Of English Collocations-in Reference To BBI And OCDES

In the past half-century, development has been made in the methodology and concept of English collocations. On the other hand, it is proved that it is really significant to do research on collocation through the combination of theory and practice. English collocations are the significant objects of both linguists and lexicographers, and it also has been a crucial criterion for measuring the ability of learners in mastering a language. Therefore, dictionaries of English collocations as the core carriers play an important role in English language learning.In this thesis, The Kenkyusha Dictionary of English Collocations, the third edition of Kenkyusha’s classical dictionaries, which was introduced into China by Foreign Language Teaching and Researching Press, is firstly introduced. Base on the third edition, the FLTRP published the new edition in2006, which offers great help to both English learners and teachers. Therefore, the design features of this dictionary covering users, size, functions and so on deserve to research in lexicography. In this thesis, design features of this dictionary are analyzed in inference to BBI and OCDSE in four aspects, in which the author attempts to analyze the design features of collocational dictionaries especially The Kenkyusha s Collocation.Then, in reference to BBI and OCDSE. it is stated that collocational dictionaries have unique retrieval features compared to the general use dictionaries, which depend on the collocational information provided in the dictionary. Furthermore, the distinctive design features of collocational dictionary, especially The Kenkyusha s Collocation, including structural features, corpus application are analyzed to present the advantages and limits compared to BBI and OCDSE. Meanwhile, the author attempts to analyze the user-friendly embodiment in its design features in three aspects of user-friendly feature-findability, workability and readability. Finally, some issues on the limitations and prospect in research status and compilation of collocational dictionary and some suggestions on improvement are put forward in the conclusion part in order to benefit more users and readers, and also, inspiration sparked in the collocational dictionary design features for designing and compiling the next generation of learners’English dictionaries is proposed.
